Backups, world import and updates

Where are worlds stored?

The server's worlds are saved under R5/Saved/SaveProfiles/Default/:

R5/
├── ServerDescription.json ← depending on the version, at the server root or here
└── Saved/SaveProfiles/Default/
├── RocksDB/ ← the exact name may vary with the version (e.g. RocksDB_v2)
│ └── <GameVersion>/
│ └── Worlds/
│ └── <WorldId>/ ← one folder per world
└── RocksDB_v2_Backups/ ← the game's automatic backups (recent versions)
  • Each world is a folder named after its identifier (<WorldId>)
  • The world loaded on startup is the one set in WorldIslandId in ServerDescription.json
  • Never rename a world folder: the database relies on this identifier

Taking a backup

From the panel

The Backups tab of the Game Panel (game.yorkhost.fr) lets you create and restore server backups. Backups are included with every Windrose plan. Take one before any risky operation:

  • game update (do it every time during Early Access)
  • importing or switching worlds
  • editing WorldDescription.json or installing a mod

For a consistent backup, stop the server before creating it. You can also automate backups with the Schedules tab.

The game's automatic backups

The Windrose server also keeps its own safety copies (RocksDB_v2_Backups folder on recent versions). Depending on the version, the AutoLoadLatestBackupIfHasBroken option in ServerDescription.json lets it automatically reload the latest copy if the world is damaged. These copies do not replace panel backups.

Keeping a copy off the server

Regularly download the R5/Saved/ folder and ServerDescription.json through the file manager or over SFTP (credentials in Settings → SFTP Details).

Restoring a backup

  1. Stop the server
  2. Restore the backup from the Backups tab, or replace the world folder with your copy
  3. Check that WorldIslandId in ServerDescription.json matches the restored world
  4. Start the server

Importing a solo world

Started your adventure locally and want to continue on your server with your crew? You can transfer your world.

Before you start
  • Back up your server (Backups tab) and keep a copy of your local world
  • Close the game on your PC and stop the server
  • Your game and the server must be on the same version

1. Find the world on your PC

On Windows, the Steam version's worlds are saved in:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\R5\Saved\SaveProfiles\<Profile>\RocksDB\<GameVersion>\Worlds\

Paste this path into the Windows Explorer address bar. <Profile> is a folder specific to your account, and the name of the RocksDB folder may vary with the version. Each subfolder of Worlds is a world: to find the right one, open its WorldDescription.json and read the WorldName value.

2. Upload the world to the server

  1. Over SFTP, open the server's R5/Saved/SaveProfiles/Default/ folder, then RocksDB/<GameVersion>/Worlds/
  2. Copy the whole folder of your world there, without renaming it
  3. Note the folder name: it is the world identifier

3. Point the server to the world

  1. Open ServerDescription.json in the Files tab
  2. Replace the WorldIslandId value with your world's identifier
  3. Save, then start the server
  4. Check in the console that the server starts without errors, then connect
The version folder must match

Copy your world into the <GameVersion> folder that matches the server's version. If the versions differ, first update the game and the server, then load your world once in solo so it is on the right version.

Bringing the server world back to solo

The reverse procedure works too: download the world folder from the server and place it in the Worlds folder on your PC. If the game reports a conflict, choose the local saves.

Switching worlds or starting over

A server can keep several worlds, one folder per world. To switch between them, stop the server and change WorldIslandId in ServerDescription.json. The previous world stays untouched on disk.

To start a fresh world, the simplest way is to create it in the game in solo with the settings you want, then import it. Avoid deleting folders by hand without a backup: if in doubt, contact support.

Updating the server

Windrose is updated regularly during Early Access, and the server must run the same version as your players' game. After each game update on Steam:

  1. Stop the server and create a backup in the Backups tab
  2. Download a copy of ServerDescription.json and the R5/Saved/ folder
  3. Run the update from the panel, according to what it offers for your server (update option in the Startup tab or update on startup)
  4. Start the server and check the console
  5. Check that your settings and your world are still there
Reinstalling

Reinstalling the server can replace or delete files. Never reinstall without a recent backup; if you are unsure how to update your server, our support team is available 7/7 on Discord.

New version folder

After an update, the server may save its worlds in a new version subfolder. Do not delete the old folder until you have checked in game that your world is there.
