Overhauls: Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy, War3zuk
An overhaul is a total conversion mod: new zombies, new classes, skill trees, items, recipes, sometimes a new UI. The best known are Darkness Falls, Undead Legacy and War3zuk AIO. They completely transform the experience, but require more care than a simple modlet.
What to know before you start
An overhaul targets a specific game version
Each version of an overhaul is built for a specific version of 7 Days to Die. This is the most important point:
- The server must run the game version expected by the overhaul
- All players must have the same game version and the same overhaul version
- Some overhauls are no longer updated, or are updated late after a major release: they may require an older version of the game
Always check the game version supported on the overhaul's official page (the author's Discord or website) before installing.
You need a new world
An overhaul changes blocks, items and sometimes world generation. Start a new game after installing it: loading a vanilla save with an overhaul (or the other way around) very often causes errors or an unusable save. See Reset the world.
Players must install it too
Overhauls contain code and assets: every player must install exactly the same overhaul on their PC, and launch the game without EAC. On the server side, EACEnabled must be false. It works the same way as client mods.
Most overhauls provide a launcher or dedicated installation instructions for players: share them with your community.
Installing an overhaul on the server
- Check the game version supported by the overhaul
- Log in to your Game Panel: game.yorkhost.fr and stop the server
- Make a backup from the Backups tab
- Download the overhaul in its server version if the author provides one (some distribute a package dedicated to dedicated servers)
- Copy its content into the
Mods/folder at the root of the server, keeping the folder structure provided by the author (one folder per mod, each with itsModInfo.xml) - In
serverconfig.xml:- set
EACEnabledtofalse - change
GameName(new save) and, if the overhaul recommends it,GameWorldor the RWG seed
- set
- Start the server and follow the Console until loading is complete
An overhaul often weighs several hundred megabytes, or even several gigabytes. SFTP transfer is more reliable than the web upload for these sizes. The credentials are in the panel's Settings → SFTP Details (see SFTP extension for VSCode).
Some overhauls ship their own sample serverconfig.xml, recommended settings or specific maps. Their instructions take precedence over this generic guide.
Which plan for an overhaul?
An overhaul significantly increases RAM and CPU usage, especially during the Blood Moon and on a large map. For an overhaul, go for at least a mid-range plan and prefer a reasonably sized map (6k or 8k). Compare plans on the 7 Days to Die hosting page or in Getting started.
Updating an overhaul
- Read the release notes: a major overhaul update often requires a new world
- Stop the server, back up, replace the overhaul folders in
Mods/(delete the old version rather than copying over it) - Warn your players: they must update at the same time as the server
Common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| The server stops while loading with XML errors | Overhaul version incompatible with the game version, or folder misplaced in Mods/ |
| Players are disconnected when joining | Overhaul missing, or a different version on the player's side |
| Invisible items or missing icons | The player does not have the overhaul, or not the same version |
| "EAC" or authentication error | EACEnabled still true on the server, or player launched with EAC |
| Server very slow during the Blood Moon | See Lag during the Blood Moon |
