Backups, world import and version 1.0
World and characters: what is stored where?
Enshrouded keeps two kinds of data apart:
- The world (modified terrain, bases, chests, map progress) is saved on the server, in the folder set by
saveDirectoryinenshrouded_server.json(./savegameby default, at the root of the server). - Characters (level, skills, inventory) are saved on each player's PC. Players therefore keep their character from one world to another, and resetting the server's world doesn't delete characters.
In the savegame folder, the world is stored as files with hexadecimal names (for example 3ad85aea and 3ad85aea_info), along with numbered copies that the game creates automatically, depending on the version. Exact names may vary: go by what you see in the Files tab.
Making a backup
From the panel
The Backups tab of the Game Panel (game.yorkhost.fr) lets you create a server backup and restore it. Create one before any risky operation:
- a game update, especially the move to version 1.0
- importing a world or resetting it
- a significant change to
enshrouded_server.json
For a consistent backup, stop the server before creating it: the world is then fully written to disk.
Keeping a copy off the server
Regularly download the savegame folder as well as enshrouded_server.json, using the file manager or SFTP (credentials in Settings → SFTP Details).
Restoring a backup
- Stop the server
- Restore the backup from the Backups tab, or replace the contents of the
savegamefolder with your copy - Start the server and check in game that the world is the one you expect
Importing a local world
Started a game solo or in co-op hosted from your PC? You can transfer that world to your YorkHost server.
Make a copy of your local world and a server backup (Backups tab) before you start.
Step 1: find the world on your PC
Depending on your setup, Enshrouded saves are usually located:
- with Steam Cloud sync, in the Steam folder:
Steam\userdata\<ID>\1203620\remote\(1203620is the game's Steam ID); - otherwise, in
%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Enshrouded\.
Each world consists of a main file with a hexadecimal name, an _info file with the same name, and possibly numbered copies. To identify the right world, go by the modification date: it's the one you played on most recently.
The folder also contains your character files. Only transfer the world files: characters stay on each player's PC.
Step 2: prepare the server
- Log in to your Game Panel: game.yorkhost.fr
- Stop the server
- In the Files tab, open the
savegamefolder - Note the names of the server's current world files (for example
3ad85aeaand3ad85aea_info), then move them to a side subfolder, or delete them if you have a backup
Step 3: upload and rename
- Upload your local world files to
savegame, using the file manager or SFTP - Rename them with the name used by the server noted in the previous step: the main file takes the name of the server's main file, the
_infofile the name of its_infofile - Start the server and follow the Console until loading is complete
- Join the server and check that your builds are there
The name and number of save files may vary with the game version. If the server creates an empty world or refuses to load yours, restore your backup and contact our support 7 days a week on Discord: we'll tell you which files to transfer.
Your friends don't need to transfer anything: they join the server with their usual characters.
Resetting the world
To start over on a new world:
- Stop the server and make a backup
- In the
savegamefolder, delete (or move aside) the world files - Start the server: a new world is created
A reset only involves the files in the savegame folder. Keep enshrouded_server.json, which holds the server name, passwords and difficulty.
Players' characters, stored on their PCs, are not reset.
Preparing for the 1.0 update
Enshrouded version 1.0 is announced for October 15, 2026. A release date can always change: follow Keen Games' official announcements.
- Your server can move to 1.0 as soon as the matching dedicated server is released.
- Before updating, stop the server, create a backup in the Backups tab and download a copy of the
savegamefolder andenshrouded_server.json. - After updating, compare
enshrouded_server.jsonwith your copy: a new version may add keys (presets, settings) or reset some values to their defaults. - All players must update their game: a client and a server on different versions cannot connect.
Compatibility of existing worlds and the hardware requirements of 1.0 aren't known yet. If your server runs short on resources after the update, you can move up a tier from your client area.
What's next?
- Configure enshrouded_server.json
- Troubleshooting: world no longer loading, client and server on different versions
