Becoming a server admin

On a Sons of the Forest dedicated server, admin rights are granted to the players listed in the ownerswhitelist.txt file. These players get owner rights on the server.

Finding your SteamID64​

The file expects the SteamID64 of each admin: a 17-digit identifier starting with 7656….

  • If you have not set a custom URL, it appears in the URL of your Steam profile: steamcommunity.com/profiles/7656…
  • Otherwise, paste your Steam profile URL into a site such as steamid.io to get your SteamID64
No nicknames

Your Steam nickname or in-game name will not work: only the SteamID64 is recognized.

Adding an admin​

  1. Log in to your Game Panel: game.yorkhost.fr
  2. Stop the server from the Console
  3. Open the Files tab and edit ownerswhitelist.txt, in the same folder as dedicatedserver.cfg (see Where is the file?)
  4. Add one SteamID64 per line, with no other text:
76561198000000000
76561198000000001
  1. Save, then start the server

Listed players get owner rights the next time they connect.

File missing?

ownerswhitelist.txt is created on the server's first startup. If it does not exist, start the server once, wait for startup to finish, then stop it. If the file already contains comment lines, add your IDs below them without changing them.

What owner rights allow​

Once connected in game, an owner can manage the other players in the game, including kicking or banning them from the player list in the game menu. The exact options available depend on the game version.

Also protect access to the server

Owner rights do not replace a password: for a game between friends, set Password in dedicatedserver.cfg so that only your guests can join. See Configuring dedicatedserver.cfg.

Removing an admin​

Stop the server, delete the matching line in ownerswhitelist.txt, save and restart.

Giving a co-admin access to the panel​

In-game rights (ownerswhitelist.txt) are separate from Game Panel access. To let a friend restart the server, change the configuration or manage backups, add them as a panel sub-user with the required permissions.
