Getting started with your Terraria server
This guide takes you from your order to your first connection: choosing a plan and a server mode, getting around the Game Panel, joining from the game and making the first settings. The other pages of this section then cover configuration, administration, mods and world imports in detail.
Choosing a plan
YorkHost offers Terraria server hosting on AMD Ryzen or Intel CPUs, NVMe storage, with Anti-DDoS protection, backups included and 7/7 support on Discord. Four plans are available:
| Plan | vCores | RAM | Storage | Indicative price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Copper | 1 | 2 GB | 10 GB NVMe | €1.99/month | 1-8 players (vanilla), vanilla or TShock |
| Hellstone | 2 | 4 GB | 20 GB NVMe | €2.99/month | 8-16 players or light tModLoader |
| Hallowed | 3 | 6 GB | 30 GB NVMe | €4.99/month | 16-32 players / tModLoader (Calamity…) |
| Zenith | 4 | 8 GB | 40 GB NVMe | €6.99/month | 32+ players / large modpacks |
The reference prices and specifications are the ones shown on the Terraria page of the YorkHost website at the time of ordering. You can upgrade at any time from your client area.
How much RAM do you need?
A vanilla Terraria server is very lightweight: even a large world shared with friends fits in 2 GB of RAM. tModLoader mods are what drive usage up, sometimes sharply with Calamity, Thorium or large modpacks. The server mostly uses a single core, so RAM is the main thing to watch.
Vanilla, tModLoader or TShock?
Your server can run in three modes:
| Mode | What it is for | Players need |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla | The official dedicated server, untouched | Regular Terraria |
| tModLoader | Mods: Calamity, Thorium, Workshop mods | Every player launches tModLoader (free on Steam for Terraria owners) with the same mods |
| TShock | Enhanced vanilla server: plugins, groups, permissions, region protection | Regular Terraria |
The mode can be installed from the panel or on request through our support team on Discord. Take a backup of your world before switching modes.
TShock and tModLoader are two different servers: you cannot install TShock plugins on a tModLoader server, nor tModLoader mods on a TShock server. Choose one or the other depending on your project.
Accessing the Game Panel
Your server is managed from the Game Panel (Wisp):
- Log in to your Game Panel:
- Select your Terraria server
- You land on the Console: this is where you start, stop and restart the server, follow its startup in real time and type server commands
The most useful tabs for Terraria:
| Tab | Use |
|---|---|
| Console | Start / stop the server, read the logs, type commands (save, kick, say…) |
| Files | File manager: serverconfig.txt, .wld worlds, mods or TShock folder |
| Startup | Startup parameters exposed by the panel |
| Backups | Server backups |
| Schedules | Scheduled tasks, for example an automatic restart |
To transfer worlds or mods, you can also use SFTP access. The credentials are in Settings → SFTP Details: see SFTP extension for VSCode or use a client such as FileZilla or WinSCP.
On first launch, the server generates the world if it does not exist yet. A large world can take one to several minutes, longer with tModLoader and big mods. Wait until the console shows that the server is listening (Server started or Listening on port, depending on the version) before connecting.
Finding the IP address and port
The connection address is shown in the Game Panel, on your server's page, in IP:PORT format.
Terraria's default port is 7777, but at YorkHost the port is assigned by the panel and may be different. Always use the one shown in the panel. Opening the port is handled on our side (see Are all ports open?).
Do not edit the port= line of serverconfig.txt (nor ServerPort in the TShock configuration): the server must listen on the port assigned by the panel, otherwise it will be unreachable.
Joining the server from the game
Once the console has settled (the world is loaded):
- Launch Terraria (or tModLoader if your server is modded)
- Click Multiplayer, then Join via IP
- Choose your character
- Enter the IP shown in the panel, confirm, then enter the port
- Enter the server password if you set one
The client must be on the same version as the server, otherwise the connection is refused. A Journey character can only join a Journey world, and vice versa. See Troubleshooting.
Our servers are built for PC players (Windows, macOS and Linux). The console and mobile versions of Terraria are not guaranteed to work with a PC dedicated server, and a tModLoader server is PC-only.
The first three things to set up
- The world: name, size and difficulty are chosen before generation, in
serverconfig.txt: see Configure serverconfig.txt. You can also import your existing world. - Password and max players:
passwordandmaxplayers, in the same file. - Administration: console commands on vanilla, owner account with TShock: see Administration and TShock.
Going further
- Configure serverconfig.txt: world, size, difficulty, password, message of the day
- Administration and TShock: console commands,
/setup, groups and permissions - tModLoader: mods and Calamity
- Importing a world and backups
- Troubleshooting
Our team is available 7 days a week on Discord or through your client area.
