Backups and importing a world

Where is the world stored?

The server's worlds are saved as .sav files in the following folder, from the server root:

RSDragonwilds/Saved/SaveGames/

Depending on the version, the folder may also appear as Savegames. On startup, the server loads the most recent .sav file in this folder. If it finds none, it creates a new standard world, named after the DefaultWorldName setting (see Configure the server).

One active world at a time

Since the server always loads the most recent save, leaving several .sav files in the folder can make it load a different world from the one you expect. Keep your old worlds outside this folder (on your PC or in a panel backup).

Making a backup

From the panel

The Game Panel's Backups tab (game.yorkhost.fr) lets you create a server backup and restore it. Create one before any risky operation:

  • game update: updates are frequent and also affect the dedicated server;
  • importing another world or starting over;
  • a major configuration change.

For a consistent backup, stop the server before running it.

Automating backups

The Schedules tab lets you schedule tasks, for example a regular backup or an automatic restart during off-peak hours.

Keeping a copy off the server

Regularly download the contents of RSDragonwilds/Saved/SaveGames/ as well as DedicatedServer.ini, through the file manager or over SFTP (credentials in Settings → SFTP Details).

Restoring a backup

  1. Stop the server
  2. Restore the backup from the Backups tab, or replace the contents of RSDragonwilds/Saved/SaveGames/ with your copy
  3. Start the server and check in the Console which world was loaded

Importing a solo or self-hosted world from your PC

You can continue on the server a world you started solo or hosted from your PC.

1. Find the world on your PC

On a Windows PC, local worlds are usually located in:

%LOCALAPPDATA%\RSDragonwilds\Saved\SaveGames\

Paste this path into the Windows Explorer address bar. Find the .sav file of the world you want to import (if in doubt, the modification date helps). Close the game before copying it.

2. Upload it to the server

  1. In the panel, stop the server
  2. Make a backup from the Backups tab
  3. In the Files tab, open RSDragonwilds/Saved/SaveGames/
  4. Empty the folder (download its contents first if you want to keep them)
  5. Upload your .sav file to this folder, through the file manager or over SFTP
  6. Start the server and follow the Console
Empty the folder before importing

If old saves remain in the folder and are more recent than your file, the server will load them instead of your world, without any error message.

3. Finding the world in game

The imported world keeps the name it had on your PC: that's the name your players must search for in the Public tab, not the DefaultWorldName value. If the world had a password, the server's WorldPassword setting may override it: check it in the configuration.

Custom world types

To play on a world with specific creation settings, first create it in the game on your PC, then import it to the server using this method.

Starting over

  1. Stop the server and make a backup
  2. Empty the RSDragonwilds/Saved/SaveGames/ folder (download it first if you want to be able to go back)
  3. If you want a new name, change DefaultWorldName (see Configure the server)
  4. Start the server: it creates a new world
Don't delete the configuration

Only delete the world saves, not the RSDragonwilds/Saved/Config/ folder: it holds DedicatedServer.ini, with your Owner ID and passwords.

Game updates

Released as version 1.0 on September 15, 2026, Dragonwilds keeps receiving updates and hotfixes. A few rules:

  • The server and the players must be on the same version. After a game update, restart the server so it syncs, then check its version in the Console (it's shown at startup).
  • Back up before every major update, so you can roll back if a save causes problems.
  • If your server's Startup tab offers an update-related setting, change it with the server stopped. If the server stays on an old version after a restart, contact support.
