Backups and importing a world

Everything in a Conan Exiles server's game (buildings, characters, clans, thralls, chests…) is stored in a single database file: game.db. Backing it up means backing up your world.

Where is the game stored?

ConanSandbox/
├── Saved/
│ ├── game.db ← the game (Exiled Lands map)
│ ├── Config/WindowsServer/ ← ServerSettings.ini, Engine.ini, Game.ini
│ └── Logs/ ← server logs
└── Mods/ ← mods and modlist.txt
  • On the Isle of Siptah map, the database has a different name, usually dlc_siptah.db, in the same folder.
  • The server may also create automatic copies next to it (files such as game_backup_1.db, depending on the version): don't confuse them with the current game.
  • Configuration files and mods are separate: remember to back them up too.

Taking a backup

From the panel

The Backups tab of the Game Panel (game.yorkhost.fr) lets you create a server backup and restore it. Create one before any risky operation:

  • adding, updating or removing a mod
  • updating the game
  • changing map or wiping the world

To automate your backups, use the Schedules tab.

Stop the server for a reliable backup

game.db is a database that is written continuously while the server runs. To get a consistent copy, stop the server from the Console before backing up or downloading the file.

Keeping a copy off the server

Regularly download ConanSandbox/Saved/game.db, along with your configuration files (ServerSettings.ini, Engine.ini, Game.ini) and ConanSandbox/Mods/modlist.txt, through the file manager or over SFTP (credentials in Settings → SFTP Details). game.db grows over time: SFTP is better suited to transfer it.

Restoring a backup

  1. Stop the server
  2. Restore the backup from the Backups tab, or replace ConanSandbox/Saved/game.db with your copy
  3. Check that the installed mods are the same as when the backup was taken
  4. Start the server

Importing an existing game

You can carry on a game from another host or from your single-player / co-op game.

  1. Get the original game's game.db file:
    • Another host: in the old server's ConanSandbox/Saved/ folder, with the server stopped
    • Single-player game: in the game's install folder on your PC, …/steamapps/common/Conan Exiles/ConanSandbox/Saved/
  2. At YorkHost, stop the server and take a backup
  3. Upload your game.db to ConanSandbox/Saved/ over SFTP, replacing the existing file
  4. If the game used mods, install the same mods in the same order (see Install mods)
  5. Copy your settings into ServerSettings.ini if you want the same rules
  6. Start the server and check in game that your buildings are there
Things to watch
  • The file must match the same map the server runs (game.db for the Exiled Lands, dlc_siptah.db for Isle of Siptah).
  • A game created before the move to Conan Exiles Enhanced (Unreal Engine 5) isn't necessarily compatible with the current server. Always keep a copy of the original.
  • Characters are tied to players' accounts: a player gets their character back by connecting with the same account as in the original game.

Wiping the world

To start from scratch:

  1. Stop the server and take a backup
  2. Delete (or rename, for example to game_season1.db) the ConanSandbox/Saved/game.db file
  3. Start the server: it creates a new, empty database

Your settings (ServerSettings.ini), your mods and your admin password are kept. However, all characters, clans and buildings are reset.

Changing map

If your server's Startup tab offers a map choice (Exiled Lands or Isle of Siptah), change it with the server stopped. Each map has its own database: your game on the other map is not deleted. If no such setting is available, contact support.
