Installing mods
Satisfactory community mods are available on ficsit.app and are installed with Satisfactory Mod Manager (SMM), the community's official tool. SMM can also manage the mods of a dedicated server, for instance over SFTP.
Mods are not supported by the game's publisher. After a Satisfactory update, some mods may stay incompatible until their authors update them, and a modded save may no longer load without its mods. Always take a backup (panel Backups tab) before installing, updating or removing a mod.
Rules to know
- Same mods for everyone: every player must have the same mods, in the same versions, as the server
- Server compatibility: not every mod works on a dedicated server. Check on the mod's ficsit.app page that it is compatible with dedicated servers
- Linux server: your server runs on native Linux, so the mod must support Linux servers, which ficsit.app usually indicates
- RAM: mods, especially large content packs, increase memory usage. The Project Assembly plan is designed for modded games
Installing mods with SMM (SFTP)
- Install Satisfactory Mod Manager on your PC from ficsit.app
- In the panel, note your SFTP credentials under Settings → SFTP Details (host, port, username and password)
- In SMM, open server management and add an SFTP server with these credentials
- Set the path to the server root folder, the one that contains the
FactoryGamefolder - Stop the server from the panel Console
- In SMM, select this server as the target, then install the mods you want (SMM also adds dependencies such as the Satisfactory Mod Loader)
- Start the server and check in the Console that the mods load without errors
The exact labels may vary between SMM versions; refer to its documentation if a screen looks different.
Each player installs the same mods on their own game with SMM. The simplest way is to create an SMM profile dedicated to the server and share the list of mods (and their versions) with your group.
Removing a mod or going back to vanilla
- Take a backup from the Backups tab
- Stop the server
- Uninstall the mod in SMM (server target), or remove it from the
FactoryGame/Mods/folder over SFTP - Start the server
A save that uses buildings or items added by a mod may lose them, or even fail to load, without that mod. Keep your pre-removal backup.
After a game update
After a major Satisfactory update:
- Wait for your mods (and the Satisfactory Mod Loader) to be updated on ficsit.app
- If the server no longer starts, temporarily remove the mods to check whether they are the cause
- Update the mods on the server and for every player at the same time
