A Terraria server mostly runs on a single core, so RAM is what matters for mods. You can upgrade at any time from your client area.

Guide

Terraria server hosting: which plan to pick and how to set it up

Renting a Terraria server keeps your world online around the clock: your friends can play even when the host is offline, without slowing down anyone's PC or forwarding ports on a home router. Here is how to pick the right plan and get your server configured.

Which plan fits your players and mods?

A vanilla Terraria server is very lightweight: even a large world shared with friends runs comfortably on 2 GB of RAM. tModLoader mods are what drive usage up, sometimes sharply with content mods like Calamity or large modpacks.

  • Copper 1 vCore · 2 GBVanilla server with friends, up to 8 players, any world size.
  • Hellstone 2 vCores · 4 GB8 to 16 players, TShock or tModLoader with a few light mods.
  • Hallowed 3 vCores · 6 GB16 to 32 players or tModLoader with Calamity, Thorium…
  • Zenith 4 vCores · 8 GB32+ players or large tModLoader modpacks.

These are guidelines only: you can move up a plan from your client area whenever your community or mod list grows.

Vanilla, tModLoader or TShock: which server mode?

Vanilla runs the official dedicated server for the original experience. tModLoader lets you install Calamity, Thorium and Workshop mods: every player then launches tModLoader, free on Steam for Terraria owners, with the same mod versions as the server. TShock adds plugins, groups and permissions on top of the vanilla server, which is very handy for public servers.

Each mode can be installed from the panel or on request through our support team. TShock and tModLoader cannot be combined, so choose the one that fits your project.

World, difficulty and server settings

The serverconfig.txt file holds all the settings: world name and size (small, medium or large), difficulty (Classic, Expert, Master or Journey), seed, max players, password and message of the day. You can also import an existing world by uploading its .wld file to the worlds folder with the file manager or over SFTP.

A Terraria server mostly uses a single core, so for smooth invasions and boss fights, CPU performance and NVMe storage matter more than the number of vCores.

Wisp panel, backups and support

You manage your server from the Wisp panel: a real-time console for admin commands, a file manager, SFTP access, backups and a task scheduler to automate restarts and backups. Take a backup before every update or mod change so you can roll back easily.

Our team answers 7 days a week on Discord to help you install tModLoader or TShock, configure your world or troubleshoot an issue.

FAQ

FAQ - Terraria Servers

Answers to the most common questions about our Terraria servers.

Vanilla Terraria is light: the Copper plan (2 GB) handles a large world with friends. With tModLoader it depends on your mods: around 4 GB (Hellstone) for a few light mods, 6 GB (Hallowed) for Calamity or Thorium and 8 GB (Zenith) for large modpacks. The server mostly uses one core, so RAM is the main thing to size.

Terraria's maxplayers setting goes up to 255. In practice, we recommend Copper for up to 8 vanilla players, Hellstone for 8 to 16 players, Hallowed for 16 to 32 players and Zenith beyond that or with large modpacks.

Yes. tModLoader can be installed from the panel or on request through our support team. Mods (Calamity, Thorium, Workshop mods…) go in the server's Mods folder. Every player needs to launch tModLoader, free on Steam for Terraria owners, with the same mods in the same versions; tModLoader usually offers to download missing mods when joining.

TShock is an enhanced vanilla Terraria server: plugins, groups, permissions, player accounts, region protection and moderation tools. It is ideal for public or community servers and works with vanilla clients. It cannot be combined with tModLoader. TShock can be installed from the panel or on request through our support team.

In serverconfig.txt, the autocreate setting sets the size of a new world (1 small, 2 medium, 3 large) and difficulty sets the difficulty (0 Classic, 1 Expert, 2 Master, 3 Journey). To keep playing an existing world, upload its .wld file to the worlds folder with the file manager or over SFTP, then point the config to it.

On vanilla, you run the server from the Wisp panel console with commands such as kick, ban, save, time, password or motd. With TShock, a setup code appears in the console on first start: type /setup followed by that code in game, then create your owner account to get full permissions.

Our servers are built for PC players (Windows, macOS and Linux). The console and mobile versions of Terraria have their own multiplayer system and are not guaranteed to work with a PC dedicated server, and tModLoader servers are PC-only. If your group plays on console or mobile, contact our support team before ordering.

Yes, backups are included with every Terraria plan. You create and restore them from the Wisp panel and can automate them with the task scheduler. We recommend taking one before every game update or mod change.

Your Terraria server is deployed automatically a few minutes after payment. You get access to the Wisp panel and can invite your friends right away.
